Our birdseed is part of a sustainable, closed-loop process that supports quality, value, and fairness. We grow some of the ingredients ourselves, source others from local farming friends, and partner with a trusted seed merchant of over 30 years to ensure a consistent, high standard. Bagged fresh to order, smaller sizes come in plain paper bags that are fully compostable, while the 12.55kg sizes are packed in recyclable, reusable woven polyprop bags – no extra packaging needed. It’s a simple, eco-friendly way to bring high-quality seed to your garden birds.

  • Minimises food miles with farm-grown and locally sourced ingredients.
  • Bulk sizes save money while reducing individual packaging waste.
  • Fits perfectly with your sustainable lifestyle.

Legume Fact: Fun fact - peanuts are not actually nuts but legumes, part of the bean family!

Wiggly Wigglers supply only top-quality bird peanuts, fully tested to ensure they contain no detectable signs of aflatoxin contamination. Peanuts are a rich source of protein, oil, and other important nutrients for many garden birds. They are an easy feed option for busy people who want to attract a variety of birds to their garden, leaving little mess behind.

It's worth noting that there’s no way for us to grow peanuts in the UK as at the moment it’s too cold but they are a fascinating plant. They are unique because their plants flower above ground while the fertilised pods develop underground. After flowering, the stem of the peanut plant pushes the immature pod into the soil where it grows horizontally and matures safely. This underground development hides the pods, unlike other legumes which hang in the open. Each plant can produce over forty pods, each containing two or more peanuts, maturing over four to five months. Consequently, one plant can yield hundreds of peanuts.

Suitable Feeder: IMPORTANT: Use in a mesh peanut feeder to ensure safe feeding and reduce the risk of young birds choking.

Supporting Our Farm and Wildlife

At Wiggly Wigglers, we are proud to be based on a Duchy Farm in Herefordshire and to be one of the six focus farms selected by the Duchy estate. Our farm is dedicated to advancing natural resources and carbon management, aiming for a sustainable future. Over the last 18 months, we have planted a complete wildflower meadow and created a new pond, significantly enhancing the habitat for local wildlife. You have helped us achieve this indirectly by using us for your birdfood supplies and directly by tipping us in the checkout for our Piggy Bank Project. The Wiggly Piggy Bank at Wiggly Wigglers aims to transform a 15-acre steep bank on Lower Blakemere Farm into Woodland Pasture, enhancing carbon sequestration, wildlife habitat, and grazing areas. This project is using free-range pigs for natural bramble clearance. With the goal of raising £12,000, the initiative is part of the farm's broader regenerative agriculture journey, which focuses on soil health, reducing chemical reliance, and increasing biodiversity.

Frequently Asked Questions (FAQ) for Feeding Peanuts to Garden Birds:

Q: Can I feed peanuts to all types of birds in my garden?

  • A: Peanuts are generally suitable for a variety of garden birds, including sparrows, tits, woodpeckers, and finches. However, avoid feeding whole peanuts during the breeding season, as they can pose a choking hazard for fledglings. Crushed or chopped peanuts are safer.

Q: Should I use a special feeder for peanuts?

  • A: Yes, using a mesh or wire feeder specifically designed for peanuts is recommended. This helps prevent larger birds from taking whole peanuts, and the mesh design allows birds to peck at smaller pieces safely.

Q: How often should I refill the peanut feeder?

  • A: Check the feeder regularly, especially during colder months, as birds may rely on the extra energy provided by peanuts. Refill the feeder when it's empty to ensure a consistent food source for your feathered visitors.

Q: Are there any birds I should be cautious about attracting with peanuts?

  • A: While peanuts are generally safe, they can attract larger birds like pigeons and crows. If you want to specifically target smaller garden birds, consider using feeders designed to deter larger species.

Q: Should I provide water alongside peanuts?

  • A8: Yes, always have a fresh water source nearby. Birds need water for drinking and bathing, especially when consuming dry foods like peanuts.

Q: Are there any seasons when I shouldn't feed peanuts?

  • A: Avoid offering whole peanuts during the breeding season to prevent choking hazards for fledglings. Crushed or chopped peanuts are safer alternatives.

Q: Can peanuts go bad?

  • A: Yes, peanuts can become rancid over time. Store them in a cool, dry place, and check for any signs of spoilage before offering them to birds. Replace any stale or moldy peanuts promptly.
