Why Choose the Turbo Charger Compost Kit?
Key Benefits Recap:
- Reduces Waste: Divert kitchen scraps, garden waste, and Bokashi-treated items from landfill to create compost that feeds your plants and improves soil health.
- Enhances Manure Management: Perfect for muck heaps or manure piles, worms break down manure faster, producing a rich, friable product that’s easy to spread and packed with nutrients for soil health.
- Odour Control: Proper layering and worm activity keep your compost fresh and balanced.
- Works with Bokashi: Adds beneficial microbes to your heap and allows you to compost tricky items like meat and dairy.
How to Use the Turbo Charger Compost Kit
Setting Up Your Compost System
- Prepare Your Compost Area:
- For a compost heap, choose a well-drained area on bare soil.
- For bins or soil factories, position them on soil or grass to allow drainage and worm access.
- Set Up the Bedding:
- Soak the bedding block in half a bucket of water for 1 hour. Once expanded, place it at the base of your system.
- Add the Worms:
- Gently place the worms into the bedding. For active heaps, position them on the cooler side to avoid overheating.
- Layer Your Waste:
- Alternate greens (fruit, veg scraps, Bokashi-treated waste, grass clippings) with browns (cardboard, shredded paper, straw) for optimal aeration and balance.
- Aim for 2 parts brown to 1 part green – this is usually a natural mix in manure due to the straw/manure mix
Using Bokashi with Your Compost
- Add Bokashi Waste: Pre-treat kitchen scraps (including meat and dairy) in a Bokashi bin, then mix it into the middle layers of your compost.
- Boost Microbial Activity: Bokashi waste introduces beneficial microbes and generates heat, helping worms and microbes thrive.
Maintaining Your Compost
- Moisture Balance: Keep the compost as damp as a wrung-out sponge. Add water if it’s dry, or mix in extra browns if it’s too wet.
- Turn the Heap: Aerate every 2–4 weeks to speed up decomposition and distribute nutrients.
- Monitor pH and Temperature: Use Lime Mix to maintain a neutral pH. Insulate your heap in winter to keep worms active.
Inspiration: Why Worms Are Compost Heroes
- Accelerate Decomposition: Worms quickly break down organic material.
- Produce Nutrient-Rich Castings: Their castings supercharge soil fertility.
- Aerate and Balance: Worms naturally aerate your compost, keeping it odour-free.
- Support Sustainability: Reduce waste while creating free, nutrient-rich fertiliser for your garden.
