As we reach Day 6 of our Wiggle-mas countdown, we’re focusing on a delightful winter tradition: feeding our garden birds! With the cold weather upon us, our feathered friends rely even more on reliable food sources, so we’re sharing some easy bird feeding tips to keep your garden visitors well-fed and chirpy. Plus, to make things even more fun, we’re inviting you to enter our poll to vote for your favourite bird food, with a chance to win a bird feeder for participating!
Why Feed Birds in Winter?
Winter can be a challenging season for birds, as natural food sources become scarce. By providing high-energy foods in your garden, you’re not only helping birds survive the colder months but also inviting a variety of beautiful species to visit. Watching robins, blue tits, and sparrows up close brings a sense of nature’s beauty into our own backyards, adding a touch of life and colour to even the dreariest winter days.
Top Tips for Feeding Birds in Winter
1. Offer High-Energy Foods
In winter, birds need foods rich in fat and calories to maintain their energy levels. Suet pellets, sunflower hearts, and peanuts are ideal as they provide the quick, concentrated energy birds need in colder temperatures. Try placing these in a feeder or scattering some in a shallow dish.
2. Provide Fresh Water Daily
Water sources freeze quickly in winter, making it hard for birds to find drinking water. Try placing a shallow dish of fresh water in your garden each day. If it freezes, pour a bit of warm water to thaw it, but avoid adding salt as it can be harmful to birds.
3. Keep Feeders Clean and Safe
Winter weather can bring damp conditions, which can make food spoil faster. Regularly clean and dry your feeders to keep them safe and hygienic. And remember to position feeders in spots where birds feel secure from predators.
4. Vary Feeding Spots
Different bird species feel comfortable in different areas of your garden, so try offering food at various levels. Some birds like feeding on the ground, while others prefer feeders or tables. This diversity can attract a wider variety of birds to your space.
5. Choose the Right Bird Foods for Your Local Species
Certain foods attract certain types of birds, so a little variety can go a long way. Mixes like our Farmer Phil’s British Birdseed Mix contain seeds that appeal to a range of species and are designed to be suitable for British birds in particular.
