🐛 How to Rescue Your Wormery
1️⃣ Remove any slimy or foul-smelling waste.
2️⃣ Rehydrate the coir bedding block and spread evenly in the tray.
3️⃣ Add your new worms and sprinkle a handful of Lime Mix.
4️⃣ Mix in a scoop of Worm Treat for instant microbial activity.
5️⃣ Cover with the Moisture Mat and close the lid.
6️⃣ Leave 2–3 days before feeding lightly with fresh scraps.
Within a fortnight your worms will be feeding and breeding again, producing rich, sweet-smelling vermicompost and liquid feed.
🧭 Before You Buy – Check for Life and Fixable Problems
Even if you can’t see worms, don’t assume the system is dead.
🥚 Look for Worm Cocoons
Tiny oval lemon-pip-sized eggs, yellow to amber turning dark brown as they mature, are a sign of life. Each can hatch up to three baby worms within 2–4 weeks once warmth and moisture return.
To encourage hatching:

Keep conditions moist, airy, and neutral (pH ≈ 7).

Add a little fresh bedding and cover with a Moisture Mat.

Wiggly Tip: Most wormery problems stem from lack of air or excess acid — both easily fixed without a full restart.
🌱 Add a Handful of Soil
A small scoop of garden soil introduces beneficial microbes and natural grit, helping worms digest food and stabilising pH. It mimics the top of a healthy woodland floor and brings your wormery back into biological balance.
🔁 Restart or Top Up – Your Choice
You rarely need to empty everything:
1️⃣ Keep any healthy material and mix it with half your new bedding.
2️⃣ Add worms and Lime Mix; save the rest for later.
3️⃣ Feed lightly and observe.
Using part of the kit as a refresh rather than full replacement keeps existing microbes alive and saves resources.
☕ Make Your Own Worm Tea
Even during recovery, your system can create superb liquid fertiliser.
From Leachate
Drain liquid, dilute 1 : 10 with water, and use on ornamentals.
From Castings (Best Method)
1️⃣ Mix 1 L worm compost + 4–5 L non-chlorinated water.
2️⃣ Aerate for 12–24 h (stir or use a small air pump).
3️⃣ Strain and apply within a day to roots or as a leaf spray.
Aerated worm tea multiplies beneficial microbes that improve soil structure, boost root health, and help plants resist disease.
