Day 3 of Wiggle-mas: DIY Bokashi Composting Starter Tips + Free Mug!

Welcome to Day 3 of our 24 Days of Wiggle-mas! Today, we’re diving into a DIY approach to bokashi composting—a simple, eco-friendly way to turn kitchen waste into garden-enriching goodness. Plus, for today only, the first 10 orders placed will receive a FREE Wiggly mug! ☕🎄

Step-by-Step Guide to DIY Bokashi Composting

Bokashi composting is a unique way of composting that ferments your food scraps, even things like meat and dairy, that regular compost bins struggle with. Here’s how you can get started with your own bucket or, if you prefer, our Budget Bokashi Composting Bundle for just £24.95 right here.

What You’ll Need

  • A bucket with a tight-fitting lid (or grab our DIY Bundle with everything you need)
  • Bokashi bran (essential for the fermentation process)
  • Kitchen food scraps (fruit, veg, even meat and dairy are fine!)

Step 1: Layer Your Food Waste

Begin by placing your first layer of food scraps in the bucket. Sprinkle a handful of bokashi bran evenly over the layer. This bran is what helps ferment the scraps, reducing odours and speeding up the composting process.

Step 2: Compress and Seal

After adding each layer, use a plate or other flat item to press down the scraps, removing as much air as possible. Pop the lid on tightly after each layer to keep everything anaerobic (air-free).

Step 3: Repeat Until Full

Continue layering food waste and bokashi bran until your bucket is full. Make sure to always compress the layers and reseal the bucket after each addition.

Step 4: Let It Ferment

Once full, leave the sealed bucket to ferment for 2-3 weeks. During this time, you can drain off any liquid (“bokashi tea”) that collects at the bottom. This tea is rich in nutrients and can be diluted and used as a plant feed.

Step 5: Bury in the Garden or Add to Compost

Once your bucket is fully fermented, you can add the contents to your garden soil or mix it into your compost bin. This adds valuable nutrients and beneficial microbes, helping enrich your soil for healthier plants.
