How Bokashi Works

  1. Get a Bokashi Bucket
You'll need a special airtight container called a "Bokashi bucket" or "Bokashi bin." We sell them in packs of 2 with some Bokashi Bran included.

  2. Collect Kitchen Waste
Gather your kitchen scraps, including fruit and vegetable peelings, coffee grounds, eggshells, and more. Avoid large bones or excessive liquids.

  3. Layer and Sprinkle
Layer your waste in the Bokashi bucket and sprinkle a handful of Bokashi Bran over each layer. This bran contains the beneficial bacteria and yeasts needed for fermentation.

  4. Compact and Seal
After each layer, press down to remove excess air, and then seal the container tightly with its lid. This anaerobic environment is crucial for the fermentation process.

  5. Wait for Fermentation
Allow your waste to ferment for about two weeks. You’ll notice a pickled smell, which is normal. The waste will become soft and pickled but won’t turn into traditional compost during this stage.

  6. Dig It In or Bury It
Once fermentation is complete, dig the fermented waste directly into your garden soil or bury it in a hole, covering it with soil. This allows it to further decompose and enrich your soil.
