Prince William Gets Hands-On with Bokashi at Lower Blakemere Farm

We had an unforgettable day at Lower Blakemere Farm when HRH Prince William visited and got stuck into some of the innovative, regenerative methods we use to improve our soil. One of the biggest talking points? Bokashi composting!

As featured in the Evening Standard (Read the article here), Prince William was fascinated by this Japanese composting method that allows ALL kitchen waste – including meat and dairy – to be fermented and turned into rich, microbe-packed compost.

But why is Bokashi such a big deal? 🤔

1️⃣ Soil Microbiology Supercharger – The Bokashi process is anaerobic, meaning it ferments waste rather than rotting it. This preserves beneficial microbes that help soil structure, water retention, and plant health. The result? A thriving, nutrient-rich environment for your plants.

2️⃣ No Smells, No Pests – Unlike traditional composting, Bokashi waste doesn’t rot – it ferments. That means no rotting odours and no attracting vermin, making it ideal for urban and rural households alike.

3️⃣ Faster, Better Compost – Once added to the soil, Bokashi-treated waste breaks down super-fast, feeding soil life and boosting fertility. We even use it here at the farm in our cattle sheds, pre-composting our farmyard manure to enhance soil health.

Prince William was particularly interested in how home composters could adopt this method and cut down on food waste. The good news? You can start today with one of our Bokashi Composting Kits!

Want to see how it works? Here’s what you need:
✔ A Bokashi kit so that whilst you are fermenting one bucket you are filling the next (and then swop and repeat)
✔ Our farm-made Live Bokashi Bran (packed with effective microbes!)
✔ A bit of food waste – even those tricky bits like cooked leftovers and dairy

Simply layer food waste with Bokashi Bran, let it ferment, and then dig it into the soil or add it to a wormery.

Prince William may have had his first taste of Bokashi at the farm, but we’ve been championing this method for years. Whether you're in a flat with a balcony garden or managing a full-scale farm, this is the future of sustainable composting.
