Niger Seed is a favourite among small, colourful birds like goldfinches and siskins. This tiny seed is high in oil, making it perfect for birds with small beaks and high metabolisms.
Suitable Feeder: Due to its fine nature, niger seed is best used in specialised niger seed feeders rather than conventional feeders (usually bright yellow and with much smaller holes sot that the seed doesn’t all fall out). We stock a variety of niger seed feeders that are perfectly designed for this purpose.
Bird Species Attracted:
- Goldfinches
- Siskins
- Redpolls
- Greenfinches
Tip for Winter: To attract goldfinches during the winter months, consider leaving teasel heads out in your garden. Goldfinches love the seeds from teasel heads, and they provide a natural, additional food source that complements their diet.
Supporting Our Farm and Wildlife
At Wiggly Wigglers, we are proud to be based on a Duchy Farm in Herefordshire and to be one of the six focus farms selected by the Duchy estate. Our farm is dedicated to advancing natural resources and carbon management, aiming for a sustainable future.
Here’s how growing, mixing, and bagging our birdseed supports our farm, wildlife, and the community:
- Growing Native Plants: We cultivate a variety of native plants to create a rich habitat for local wildlife. This practice enhances biodiversity and supports the ecosystem.
- Using Compost: Enriching our soil with natural compost boosts fertility and promotes healthy plant growth, essential for high-quality birdseed production.
- Making Compost Teas: We use nutrient-rich compost teas to naturally feed our crops and improve soil health.
- Mob Grazing Cattle: Implementing mob grazing techniques mimics natural grazing patterns, improving soil health and plant diversity.
- Planting Cover Crops: These crops protect and nourish the soil, prevent erosion, and enhance biodiversity.
- Stopping the Use of Our Plough: Reducing soil disturbance helps maintain soil integrity and supports a thriving ecosystem.
By growing and processing our birdseed on-site, we reduce our carbon footprint and ensure the highest quality product. This process not only supports local wildlife but also provides jobs and sustains our farming community. Thanks to these efforts, a BTO survey identified 49 species of birds on our farm—an amazing result that shows the positive impact of our practices.
By choosing our birdseed, you’re directly supporting our farm and its wildlife-friendly practices, promoting a healthier environment for both birds and people.

Frequently Asked Questions (FAQ) for Feeding Niger Seed to Garden Birds:
Q: What birds are attracted to niger seed?
A: Niger seed is particularly attractive to finches, such as goldfinches and siskins. Other small birds like redpolls and sparrows may also enjoy it.
Q: Do I need a special feeder for niger seed?
A: Yes, it's best to use a feeder with small ports specifically designed for niger seed. This helps prevent spillage and waste.
Q: Can I mix niger seed with other bird foods?
A: Niger seed is often best offered on its own as it is tiny and can easily spill from mixed feeders. Providing a separate niger seed feeder is more effective.
Q: How often should I refill the niger seed feeder?
A: Check the feeder regularly and refill it when empty to ensure a consistent supply for finches and other birds that enjoy niger seed.
Q: Can I feed niger seed year-round?
A: Yes, niger seed can be provided throughout the year. It's a high-energy food source, especially valuable during the breeding season and winter months.
Q: Are there any birds I should be cautious about attracting with niger seed?
A: Niger seed primarily attracts smaller birds. Larger birds, such as pigeons and doves, are less likely to be interested in niger seed.
Q: Can I offer niger seed to ground-feeding birds?
A: Niger seed is best offered in elevated feeders designed for small birds. Ground-feeding birds may not be as attracted to niger seed, so using elevated feeders helps target the intended species.
Q: Do niger seeds go bad?
A: Store niger seed in a cool, dry place to prevent it from becoming rancid. Check for any signs of spoilage before offering it to birds and replace any stale or moldy seeds.
Q: Should I provide water alongside niger seed?
A: Yes, always have a fresh water source nearby. Birds need water for drinking and bathing, especially when consuming dry foods like niger seed.
Q: Can niger seed attract unwanted pests?
A: Properly maintained feeders and regular cleaning can help minimise the risk of attracting pests. Ensure that the feeders are in good condition and clean up any spilled seeds promptly.
