What is Diatomaceous Earth (DE Powder)?
Diatomaceous Earth, commonly known as DE Powder, is a natural, mineral-rich substance made from the fossilised remains of microscopic aquatic organisms called diatoms. These tiny diatoms have intricately woven shells that are ground into a fine powder, creating a product with an impressive array of uses, from odour control to soil improvement.
This incredible powder works primarily through absorption, acting like a super sponge to soak up moisture, oils, and smells. Its versatility and eco-friendly nature have made it a must-have for worm composting, gardening, pet care, and more.
Why Use DE Powder in Your Wormery?
-
Odour and Moisture Control: A light dusting of DE Powder keeps your wormery balanced by absorbing excess moisture and neutralising odours, making it less attractive to flies and other pests.
-
Fly Deterrent: Helps prevent fruit flies and other insects from becoming a problem in your wormery by creating an environment they dislike.
-
Safe and Effective: DE Powder is natural and safe to use around worms, ensuring your composting system stays productive and pest-free.
Wide Applications for DE Powder
For Soil and Compost
-
Enhances Compost Quality: Mix with compost to improve moisture retention and nutrient availability, creating richer, more fertile compost for your garden.
-
Supports Plant Growth: Proven in market garden trials, DE Powder strengthens root systems, encourages healthy top growth, and boosts fruit yields.
-
Seed Germination: Coating seeds with DE Powder can promote faster germination and healthier seedlings.
For Pet and Livestock Care
-
Animal Bedding: Sprinkle on pet or livestock bedding to absorb odours and moisture, creating a fresher, more hygienic environment.
-
Feed Additive: Adding DE Powder to animal feed can promote overall health and well-being for pets and livestock.
Around the Home
-
Odour Control: Use in bins, litter trays, or other areas prone to smells for natural, long-lasting freshness.
-
Cleaning and Polishing: DE Powder can be used to clean and polish metal surfaces, making it a handy addition to your household cleaning toolkit.
How to Use DE Powder
-
In Your Wormery: Apply a light dusting of DE Powder using the puffer nozzle (available in the 100g bottle) to the surface of the wormery contents. Use as needed to maintain moisture and odour balance.
-
In Compost: Mix a handful of DE Powder into your compost to improve moisture retention and nutrient uptake.
-
For Plants: Sprinkle around the base of plants or mix into the soil to boost root development and growth.
-
For Bedding or Feed: Lightly dust animal bedding or mix a small amount into feed for added benefits.
Key Features of DE Powder
-
Natural and Eco-Friendly: Derived from fossilised diatoms, DE Powder is a completely natural, sustainable, and biodegradable product.
-
Packed with Minerals: Contains silicon dioxide and other trace elements that support plant and soil health.
