Q and A’s

Can we bring our dog? Well behaved dogs on leads are welcome to join our farm tour.

Do we need to bring anything for the farm tour or experience? Please bring wellies and waterproofs if the forecast is rain as the walk is on fields and may well be muddy.

Is the farm ground suitable for buggies? The farm yard, in our experience, is suitable for both buggies and pushchairs, but on the walk there is some rough ground and some slopes, so most buggies will find this difficult.

Are there disabled facilities and access? Our barn has disabled toilets and parking.
If you’re considering joining one email to discuss beforehand if you’d like to. The guided walk is on rough terrain so wheelchair movement isn’t possible, but we seek to accommodate everyone, wherever we can and there are parts of the tour that are in the yard on hardstanding so that would work.

What if the weather is bad? Please bring your wet weather gear and we will push on through. We do have undercover spot for when the weather’s bad as we can then carry out many of our tour activities in a sheltered space.

How long does each activity take? The whole experience takes 1.5hrs.

Do you sell your own produce and is it available to purchase when we visit? Yes, we sell our own bird seeds, composters, and bokashi which you are welcome to buy when you come.

Do you sell refreshments? We don’t sell refreshments but there will be tea, coffee, water, juice and cake as part of your ticket.

Do you cater for large parties? Yes, we welcome large parties. But we ask that you get in touch with us before your trip so that we may organise in advance of your arrival.

Lower Blakemere Farm is a mixed farm located on The Duchy of Cornwall Estate in Herefordshire, England. The farm is a specialist seed producer and produces a range of crops including grass seed, vining peas, wheat, and barley. Additionally, the farm has a breeding herd of beef cattle. The farm is a member of the LEAF program and has implemented both entry-level and higher-level environmental schemes to improve the farm for wildlife and is a focus farm for The Duchy Estate aiming for Carbon Net Zero by 2030.

Biodiversity and Wildlife Conservation
Lower Blakemere Farm is committed to preserving and enhancing biodiversity on the farm. The farm has over 40 species of birds, including the Linnet, Yellowhammer, and Skylark, which are classified as red status and are of high conservation concern. The farm has conducted a farmland bird survey in collaboration with the BTO to monitor and improve the bird populations on the farm. Additionally, the farm has implemented environmental schemes that focus on creating habitats for wildlife, such as planting wildflower margins and hedgerows.

Eco-conscious, Regenerative Farming
In recent years, Lower Blakemere Farm has shifted towards eco-conscious, regenerative farming practices. Regenerative farming is a holistic approach to agriculture that focuses on building soil health, increasing biodiversity, and reducing the use of chemical inputs. The farm has implemented several regenerative practices, such as cover cropping, reducing tillage, and integrating livestock into crop rotations, as well as making a new pond and planting a wildflower meadow. The farm has also become the UK’s largest producer of Bokashi, a natural composting method that helps improve soil health and fertility.
