Why Choose the Organko Green/Grey Bokashi Value Pack?

This complete kit is perfect for anyone serious about reducing waste, improving soil health, and creating a more sustainable lifestyle. With two bins, you can seamlessly fill one while the other ferments, ensuring a continuous composting cycle without interruptions.

Each 16-litre bin holds approximately 7kg of kitchen waste, making this system ideal for households producing regular food waste. Whether you're tackling vegetable scraps, cooked leftovers, or meat and dairy, this kit handles it all with ease.

With thousands of homes supplied over the years, Wiggly Wigglers has built a reputation for quality and sustainability. We’ve been producing our own Bokashi Active Bran for over 30 years, helping households across the UK take responsibility for their waste and turn it into something extraordinary.

How Bokashi Composting Works:

  1. Add Your Scraps: Layer your food waste – from fruit peels to fish bones – into the Bokashi bin.

  2. Sprinkle Bokashi Bran: Cover each layer with 2–3 tablespoons of Bokashi Active Bran to kick-start the fermentation process.

  3. Compact and Seal: Press the waste down to remove air and seal the lid tightly to maintain anaerobic conditions.

  4. Ferment: Allow the waste to ferment for 10–14 days, draining bokashi tea every few days.

  5. Bury the Treasure: Once fermented, bury the waste in soil or add it to your compost heap. It will decompose fully in a few weeks, enriching your soil with nutrients and beneficial microbes.

Why Bokashi Composting Matters:

The UK throws away millions of tonnes of food waste every year, much of which ends up in landfill. Bokashi composting offers an eco-friendly alternative that not only reduces waste but also benefits your garden and the planet.

  • Enrich Your Soil: Fermented Bokashi waste is a nutrient-dense superfood for your soil. It improves structure, boosts microbial activity, and enhances water retention – key to thriving plants and healthier gardens.

  • Reduce Methane Emissions: By diverting waste from landfill, Bokashi composting helps prevent the production of methane, a potent greenhouse gas.

  • Take Responsibility: Transforming your own kitchen waste into compost empowers you to close the loop, reducing reliance on commercial compost or environmentally damaging peat.

The Science of Bokashi Composting

Bokashi composting is powered by Effective Microorganisms (EM), a unique blend of lactic acid bacteria, yeasts, and photosynthetic bacteria developed by Dr Teruo Higa in the 1980s.

  • Lactic Acid Bacteria: Convert organic matter into stable compounds, suppressing harmful bacteria and odours.

  • Yeasts: Break down sugars and carbohydrates, enriching the compost with nutrients.

  • Photosynthetic Bacteria: Synthesize amino acids and sugars, boosting soil health and plant growth.

This anaerobic fermentation process preserves nutrients that would otherwise be lost, turning waste into a resource and regenerating your garden's soil health.

FAQs:

  • How fast is the Bokashi process?
Bokashi composting is incredibly quick compared to traditional methods. The fermentation process in the bin takes just 10–14 days, after which the waste is ready to be buried in soil or added to your compost heap. Once buried, it fully breaks down into nutrient-rich compost within a few weeks, depending on soil conditions.

  • What does the final product look like?
After fermentation, the waste will look similar to how it did when you added it, but with a softer texture and a slightly pickled smell. This is normal and shows that the process has worked. Once buried or added to compost, it will decompose further, turning into dark, rich organic matter that’s perfect for feeding your soil.

  • Can I use fermented Bokashi waste to inoculate my compost heap?
Absolutely! Adding fermented Bokashi waste to your compost heap introduces a wealth of beneficial microorganisms that speed up decomposition and improve the overall quality of the compost. It also helps balance the pH and enhances the microbial diversity of your heap, making the final compost richer and more beneficial for your garden.

  • What are the benefits of adding Bokashi waste to my compost heap?
Fermented Bokashi waste acts as a microbial booster for your heap, increasing the speed of decomposition and improving nutrient retention. The additional microorganisms help break down tough materials and suppress harmful pathogens, resulting in a high-quality, nutrient-dense compost that supports healthier plants and soil. It’s a fantastic way to supercharge your composting efforts!

  • Why two bins?
Having two bins ensures a seamless system. While one bin is fermenting, you can actively fill the other, keeping your composting routine smooth and efficient.

  • What can I compost with Bokashi?
Virtually everything! From vegetable scraps and coffee grounds to meat, dairy, bread, and even small bones.

  • How often should I drain the bokashi tea?
Every 2–3 days is ideal. The liquid can be diluted as a plant fertiliser or poured undiluted down drains to deodorise and prevent blockages.

  • What if I run out of Bokashi Bran?
We’ve got you covered! Subscribe to our Subscribe and Save Bokashi Active Bran service for regular deliveries and additional savings.
