Product Overview:

The Jacobi Jayne Nooks & Crannies Large Insect House is designed to accommodate and attract a wide variety of beneficial insects to your garden. With its spacious layout and thoughtfully designed compartments, this insect house is perfect for larger gardens or those looking to maximise their support for biodiversity.

Made from FSC-certified timber, this insect house provides a secure home for pollinators like solitary bees and pest controllers like ladybirds and lacewings. By adding this to your outdoor space, you create a thriving habitat that enhances plant health and fosters a balanced ecosystem.

Why Choose the Nooks & Crannies Large Insect House?

  • Spacious Design: Offers plenty of space for multiple species to nest, rest, and hibernate.

  • Supports Pollinators and Predators: Attracts solitary bees for pollination and natural pest controllers like ladybirds and lacewings.

  • Weatherproof and Long-Lasting: Built from durable, FSC-certified timber to withstand the elements and provide years of use.

  • Eco-Friendly and Sustainable: Made from responsibly sourced wood with a focus on environmental care.

  • Enhances Garden Health: Encourages a diverse population of beneficial insects, reducing pests and boosting plant productivity.

Which Insects Will Use It and Their Benefits:

  • Solitary Bees (e.g., Mason Bees, Leafcutter Bees): Vital pollinators for fruits, vegetables, and flowers, increasing yields and blooms.

  • Ladybirds: Consume aphids and other pests, acting as natural pest controllers.

  • Lacewings: Prey on common garden pests like caterpillars and mealybugs, protecting your plants.

  • Hoverflies: Pollinate flowers and help control small pest populations.

  • Woodlice and Earwigs: Assist in breaking down organic matter, enriching your soil with nutrients.

Where to Site the Large Insect House:

  1. Sunny Location: Position in a sunny, south or southeast-facing spot to keep it warm and inviting for insects.

  2. Close to Plants: Place near nectar-rich flowers, vegetable patches, or fruit trees to encourage pollination.

  3. Elevated and Secure: Fix to a wall, fence, or post at least 1 metre above the ground to protect it from predators and damp conditions.

  4. Quiet and Sheltered: Choose a location away from heavy foot traffic or noisy areas to keep the insects undisturbed.

How to Use:

  1. Install in the Right Spot: Secure the insect house in a suitable location, ensuring it is stable and well-positioned.

  2. Avoid Chemicals Nearby: Refrain from using pesticides in the vicinity, as they can harm the beneficial insects you’re attracting.

  3. Add Plant Support: Grow a variety of native plants nearby to provide food for pollinators and pest-controlling insects.

Why Beneficial Insects Matter:

  • Pollination: Without pollinators like bees and hoverflies, many flowers, fruits, and vegetables wouldn’t thrive.

  • Natural Pest Control: Predatory insects like ladybirds and lacewings help manage pest populations, reducing the need for chemicals.

  • Soil Health: Decomposers like woodlice and earwigs break down organic matter, improving soil quality.

Wiggly Tips for Supporting Insects in Large Gardens:

  • Plant Diverse Flowers: Choose a mix of nectar-rich native plants to provide food for pollinators year-round.

  • Include Water Sources: Place shallow water dishes with pebbles nearby for insects to safely drink.

  • Leave Wild Areas: Allow parts of your garden to grow wild, creating additional shelter and food sources.

  • Monitor and Maintain: Check the insect house occasionally to ensure it’s free of debris and securely positioned.

Why Choose Wiggly Wigglers?

At Lower Blakemere Farm in Herefordshire, farming is at the heart of everything we do. As specialist seed growers and beef producers, we combine generations of farming expertise with innovative practices to keep our soil healthy and our farm thriving.

Our approach is practical: we pre-compost manure, grow crops to feed our cattle, and ensure every part of the process works efficiently. Along the way, we support biodiversity, create habitats for wildlife, and tackle waste—not because we’re environmentalists, but because it makes sense for our farm, our business, and the future of British agriculture.

When you choose Wiggly Wigglers, you’re supporting a family-run farm committed to producing high-quality products while making farming work in harmony with the land.

FAQs:

  • Do I need to clean the insect house?
Generally, insect houses are self-maintaining. However, you can clean it gently in late autumn if it becomes clogged with debris.

  • Will it attract stinging insects?
Solitary bees are non-aggressive and rarely sting unless provoked, making this house safe for families and pets.

  • Can it be used in small spaces?
The large size is ideal for bigger gardens but can be used in smaller spaces if you have sufficient flowering plants nearby.
