Why Choose the Organico Bokashi Bin?
This kit is a fantastic entry point for anyone looking to turn kitchen scraps into a valuable resource. With its sleek design and manageable size, it’s perfect for starting your composting journey. While it’s fine to begin with one bin, adding a second bin will make your system truly seamless, allowing you to fill one bin while the other ferments. This means no downtime and no interruptions in your composting routine.
The 16-litre capacity handles around 7kg of kitchen waste at a time, making it ideal for small households or those new to Bokashi. Plus, the included 1kg of Bokashi Active Bran is enough to get you started for weeks of composting.
Why Bokashi Composting Matters:
The average UK household generates well over 200kg of kitchen and food waste annually, much of which ends up in landfill. Bokashi composting provides a practical, eco-friendly alternative that benefits your garden, your wallet, and the planet.
-
Soil Production and Health: Fermented Bokashi waste is packed with nutrients and beneficial microbes, which enrich the soil, improve structure, and enhance water retention. Healthier soil leads to healthier plants and a thriving garden ecosystem.
-
Waste Transformation: Bokashi composting turns your scraps into a valuable resource instead of trash. You’re actively taking responsibility for your waste and making a positive environmental impact.
-
Carbon Footprint Reduction: By composting at home, you avoid methane emissions from landfill waste and reduce the need for energy-intensive centralised composting facilities.
How Bokashi Composting Works:
-
Add Food Waste: Layer kitchen scraps – including meat, fish, dairy, and cooked food – into the bin.
-
Sprinkle Bokashi Bran: Add 2–3 tablespoons of bran for every 2 inches of waste.
-
Compact and Seal: Use the included compactor tool to press the waste down, removing air, then seal the lid to create an oxygen-free environment.
-
Ferment: Leave the waste to ferment for about 2 weeks, draining bokashi tea every 2–3 days.
-
Bury or Compost: Once fermented, bury the waste in soil or add it to your compost heap. It will fully decompose in weeks, enriching your soil with nutrients and beneficial microbes.
The Science of Bokashi:
Bokashi composting uses Effective Microorganisms (EM), a mix of lactic acid bacteria, yeasts, and photosynthetic bacteria developed by Dr Teruo Higa. This anaerobic process ferments food waste, locking in nutrients and reducing methane emissions.
-
Nutrient Retention: The fermentation process preserves essential nutrients like nitrogen and phosphorus, which are often lost in traditional composting.
-
Soil Microbiome Boost: The beneficial microbes in fermented Bokashi waste enhance soil health and suppress harmful pathogens.
-
Sustainable Soil Building: Bokashi composting creates nutrient-dense organic matter, helping to regenerate tired or depleted soils.
