Compact Food-Waste Recycling for Smaller Households (2-3 persons)

Transform your food scraps into fertile soil — simply, cleanly and without the usual mess. The Urbalive Bokashi Kit is built to suit smaller households, flats or sheltered outdoor spots. With a choice of bran sizes (1 kg, 2 kg or 5 kg) and everything you need to get started included, it’s the perfect entry into high-performance Bokashi composting.

If you want to compost kitchen waste but have limited space or don’t need a large bin, this kit is ideal. Rather than relying on large outdoor compost heaps, this compact system allows you to pickle-ferment your scraps indoors or in a sheltered outdoor place — turning waste into a resource, not a burden.
With this kit, you’ll handle fruit, vegetables, breads, cooked leftovers, even meat and dairy — and see results in your soil and garden.

  1. Place your bin in an indoor space or sheltered outdoor area (garage, covered porch, utility).
  2. Add your food waste — vegetables, fruit, bread, cooked meals, meat and dairy all accepted.
  3. Sprinkle a scoop of LIVE Bokashi Bran each time you add waste.
  4. Press or level down the waste to remove air pockets and ensure a tight seal.
  5. Close the lid and allow fermentation to start.
  6. Drain the liquid (“Bokashi tea”) every few days — use it as fertiliser or compost accelerator.
  7. Once the bin is full, leave it sealed for around 10–14 days — you’ll notice a light pickled/vinegary scent (proof of fermentation).
  8. Add the fermented load to your garden soil or compost heap — it will break down fully into rich compost in 2-5 weeks and feed microbes in your soil.

Liquid uses:

  • Dilute 1 : 100 for houseplants and garden beds.
  • Dilute 1 : 200 to accelerate your main compost heap.
  • Use neat for cleaning drains or fertilising lawns.

Helpful tip: A smaller household means a smaller bin is ideal — less waste to fill, quicker cycles, and a compact kit that fits your needs.

Here at Wiggly Wigglers (a family farm in Herefordshire), we’ve been pioneering Bokashi for over 25 years. We don’t just sell kits — we produce the LIVE Bran ourselves. On our yard you’ll see fermenters full of bran, our grainstore where the material is dried and stabilised, and the team bagging each batch with care.
Our process, featured on BBC Countryfile, ensures you’re using a product rooted in real soil care and British farming.
By buying our bran and companion kit, you’re helping close the loop — recycling kitchen waste, reducing carbon emissions, and building healthier soil one household at a time.

Unlike traditional composting (which uses oxygen and often releases methane and ammonia), Bokashi uses anaerobic fermentation. That means:

  • Nutrients in the waste remain locked in rather than lost.
  • Carbon is captured and returned to the soil, not released.
  • Beneficial microbes (EM-1 style) are activated — feeding soil biology, improving structure, increasing water retention.
  • It’s proven in countries such as Japan, Germany, Sweden and New Zealand to reduce greenhouse gas emissions, speed up waste breakdown and improve soil health.

This is more than just composting — it’s soil regeneration. It helps you turn food waste into a resource, enrich your garden, reduce reliance on peat, and keep carbon where it belongs.

Storage & Freshness: Keep your LIVE Bran sealed, cool and dry. Aim to use within 12-18 months for best effectiveness.
Maintenance: If your bin develops a rotten smell instead of a pickled aroma, add more bran and compress the load again. Regular draining of liquid is key.
Where to locate: Indoor or well-sheltered outdoor spot recommended — avoid full exposure to rain or direct sunlight.
Goes well with: Extra Bran refills (1 kg, 2 kg, 5 kg), daily kitchen collection caddy, compost heap accelerator.

What our customers say

Brilliant live worms and great service! I ordered a batch of live composting worms for my new wormery, and they arrived in perfect condition — lively, healthy, and ready to get to work straight away. The packaging was eco-friendly, and the team even included a little guide on how to settle them in. My kitchen scraps are disappearing fast, and I’ve already started harvesting my first bit of worm compost. Couldn’t be happier!

Fantastic bokashi composting advice As a complete beginner to bokashi composting, I really appreciated how helpful the team were. They answered all my questions quickly and gave me simple, clear instructions to get started. The bokashi bran is top quality and smells fresh and pleasant. After just a few weeks, I’ve turned my kitchen waste into brilliant compost-ready material with no odour or mess. Highly recommended!

Top-notch British birdseed mix The British birdseed from Wigglys is superb. It attracts a lovely variety of garden birds — robins, finches, and even a pair of goldfinches have started visiting regularly. You can tell it’s a quality mix with no fillers or dust. Delivery was quick, and everything was packaged sustainably. It’s become my go-to source for bird feed!
