Why Choose the Bokashi Organko Essential Value Pack?

The Bokashi Organko Essential Value Pack combines advanced Japanese composting technology with practical, user-friendly features. With two bins, you can maintain a continuous system – filling one while the other ferments – ensuring no interruptions in your composting cycle.

Designed with convenience in mind, the kit includes a stand for stability and easy draining, while the bins’ post-consumer recycled plastic construction aligns with eco-conscious values. Bokashi composting isn’t just sustainable – it’s quick, effective, and perfectly suited for modern lifestyles.

The Science and History of Bokashi Composting:

Bokashi composting uses Effective Microorganisms (EM), a powerful mix of lactic acid bacteria, yeasts, and photosynthetic bacteria developed by Dr Teruo Higa in the 1980s. This revolutionary Japanese technology has made Bokashi composting a staple in homes across Japan, New Zealand, Sweden, and, more recently, France.

  • Lactic Acid Bacteria: Break down organic material and suppress harmful bacteria, preventing odours and rotting.

  • Yeasts: Enhance nutrient availability by breaking down carbohydrates and sugars.

  • Photosynthetic Bacteria: Synthesize nutrients essential for soil health and plant growth.

By fermenting waste in an air-tight bin, Bokashi preserves nutrients that traditional composting often loses, creating a powerful soil amendment while minimising greenhouse gas emissions like methane.

Why Bokashi Composting Matters:

The average UK household generates over 200kg of kitchen waste per year. Much of this ends up in landfill, where it rots and emits harmful methane gas, a potent contributor to climate change. Bokashi composting changes this cycle by:

  • Empowering Responsibility: Turn waste into something valuable rather than discarding it – a practical step toward reducing your environmental impact.

  • Closing the Loop: Use what you have to nurture your garden, reducing reliance on external compost or peat, which harm ecosystems.

  • Regenerating Soil: Enrich your soil with nutrients and beneficial microbes, improving structure, water retention, and plant health.

Taking responsibility for your kitchen waste means contributing to a healthier planet, better soil, and stronger ecosystems.

How Bokashi Composting Works:

  1. Add Food Waste: Layer your food scraps into the Bokashi bin – from fruit and veg to meat and dairy.

  2. Sprinkle Bokashi Bran: Add 2–3 tablespoons of bran to cover each layer.

  3. Compact and Seal: Use the waste compactor tool to press the waste down, removing air, then seal the lid tightly.

  4. Ferment: Allow the waste to ferment for 10–14 days, draining bokashi tea every few days.

  5. Use or Bury: Once fermented, bury the waste in your garden soil or compost heap, where it will decompose fully in just weeks, enriching your soil with nutrients.

What’s So Special About Bokashi Composting?

  • Faster Results: Fermentation takes only 10–14 days, significantly quicker than traditional composting.

  • Odour-Free: The air-tight bins ensure a clean, smell-free composting process.

  • Soil Superfood: Fermented Bokashi waste is a nutrient-dense addition to your soil or compost heap, boosting microbial activity and overall compost quality.

  • Perfect for All Waste: Handles meat, dairy, and cooked food – items many traditional systems can’t process.

  • Bokashi Tea: A powerful byproduct, bokashi tea can be diluted for plant fertiliser or poured down drains to deodorise and prevent blockages.

FAQs:

  • How long does the process take?
Bokashi composting takes just 10–14 days for fermentation, after which the waste can be buried in soil or added to your compost heap for further decomposition.

  • What does the final product look like?
After fermentation, the waste will look pickled and softened but intact. Once buried or composted, it transforms into dark, crumbly compost that’s perfect for enriching your garden soil.

  • Why two bins?
Two bins allow for a continuous system – while one bin is fermenting, you can actively fill the other. This ensures there’s no downtime in your composting routine.

  • Can fermented Bokashi waste inoculate my compost heap?
Yes! Adding Bokashi waste introduces beneficial microbes that accelerate decomposition, balance the pH, and enhance the overall nutrient profile of your compost.

  • What’s the benefit of post-consumer recycled plastic?
These bins are made from plastics collected from recycling programs, reducing environmental impact while providing a durable, dishwasher-safe solution.
