What is Bokashi Active Bran?
Our Bokashi Active Bran is a specially fermented wheat bran inoculated with Effective Microorganisms (EM1), a powerful blend of lactic acid bacteria, yeasts, and photosynthetic bacteria. Developed by Dr Teruo Higa in the 1980s, this groundbreaking technology kick-starts an anaerobic fermentation process that transforms all types of kitchen waste into nutrient-rich pre-compost.
-
Odour-Free Composting: Suppresses bad smells and deters pests.
-
Versatile Use: Perfect for all food waste, including meat, fish, dairy, and cooked foods.
-
Dried for Stability: The bran is dried to lock in its microbial power, so it stays fresh and effective until you’re ready to use it.
How Bokashi Composting Works:
-
Layer Food Scraps: Add food waste to your Bokashi bin.
-
Sprinkle Bokashi Bran: Add 2–3 tablespoons of bran for every 2 inches of waste.
-
Compact and Seal: Press the waste down to remove air pockets, then close the lid tightly to maintain an oxygen-free environment.
-
Ferment: Allow the waste to ferment for two weeks, draining bokashi tea periodically.
-
Soil Integration: Once fermented, bury the waste in soil or add it to a compost heap. Within weeks, it will decompose fully, enriching the soil with nutrients and beneficial microbes.
The Science Behind Bokashi Composting
Bokashi composting harnesses the power of Effective Microorganisms (EM) to ferment waste rather than decompose it. This process retains nutrients, reduces methane emissions, and enriches soil health.
-
Lactic Acid Bacteria: Convert organic waste into stable, nutrient-rich compounds.
-
Yeasts: Break down sugars and carbohydrates, enhancing the compost’s nutritional profile.
-
Photosynthetic Bacteria: Synthesize essential nutrients that promote plant growth and support soil ecosystems.
This makes Bokashi composting an environmentally friendly alternative to landfill or traditional aerobic composting methods.
Why Compost with Bokashi?
The average UK household generates over 9kg of kitchen waste weekly, much of which ends up in landfill, emitting harmful methane gas. Bokashi composting allows you to:
-
Reduce Food Waste: Compost all kitchen scraps, including items like meat and dairy that can’t go into traditional compost.
-
Save Money: Create your own nutrient-rich compost at home rather than buying expensive bagged compost or peat.
-
Support Sustainability: Minimise landfill contributions and methane emissions while improving your garden’s soil health.
