Who You’ll Attract
Because the shell is removed, even smaller-beaked birds can enjoy them: finches (e.g., goldfinch, greenfinch), tits, sparrows, robins, blackbirds — and plenty more.
The clean hearts make the food accessible and attractive.

How to Feed Them

  • Use a tube feeder, mesh feeder, or open tray — sunflower hearts are versatile.
  • Place somewhere visible but safe — birds like cover nearby.
  • Top up little and often — fresh seed draws more birds.
  • Always leave a dish of fresh water nearby — birds need to drink and bathe.

Best Served In
✅ Seed feeder with good drainage.
✅ Bird table.
✅ Scatter on ground table/tray if you prefer.
🚫 Avoid deep peanut-style feeders — hearts are better where they’re easily accessible.

Wiggly Tip
If you see a heap of shells under a feeder (not hearts), you’re probably feeding whole sunflower with husks — try hearts instead and watch the mess vanish.

We don’t grow sunflower hearts in the UK (because the de-husking process isn’t widely available here), but we do pack and dispatch them from our Herefordshire farm. That means you still get local service, freshness and farm transparency.
The raw seed comes in, we inspect, pack in small batches and send out quickly so your birds get the best.

Sustainability & Packaging

  • Standard bags: compostable paper or recyclable materials.
  • Large sacks: reusable woven polypropylene (returnable option).
  • We aim for minimal extra packaging and lowered food-miles where possible.

Wiggly Tip
If you really want to lower food miles: plant a patch of sunflowers or tall teasels in late spring — let the birds harvest themselves later in the year. It’s a perfect garden tie-in for real wildlife focus.

Sunflower hearts support a wide array of garden bird species by delivering easy-to-eat, high-energy food. Especially important when natural food sources dip (late winter, early spring).
For you: bird-feeding is proven to boost wellbeing — even ten minutes with binoculars beats scrolling your phone. Plus seeing more species visit your garden is deeply rewarding.

Wiggly Tip
On cold mornings feed hearts early — you’ll notice the birds arrive sooner and linger longer once the language (“food’s here”) spreads.

Storage & Freshness

  • Store seed in a cool, dry, sealed container.
  • Avoid damp sheds or hot summer garages — oil-rich seeds spoil faster.
  • Use within a few months for best quality.

Wiggly Tip:
If the seed smells slightly nutty and fresh, you’re good. If it smells musty or oily gone off — compost it and get fresh. Your birds will thank you.

Goes Well With

  • Black sunflower seeds (lower food miles, strong attraction)
  • Huskless mixes (for a tidy feeder setup)
  • British Suet Balls (for extra fat & winter support)

Quick FAQs
Will sunflower hearts grow under a feeder?
Very unlikely — removal of husks means fewer viable seeds. Some may sprout but rare.
Are they British-grown?
No — hearts are mostly imported because of the processing required.
Are they suitable for all birds?
Yes for most garden birds; they’re particularly good for both strong and smaller beaks because no shell to crack.
How long will they keep?
If stored cool & dry: several months. But fresh is always better.

The Wiggly Story: Bringing Your Garden to Life.

Nestled in the heart of rural Herefordshire, within The Duchy of Cornwall estate lies Lower Blakemere Farm – the cherished home of Wiggly Wigglers and founder, Heather Gorringe. What our customers say

Brilliant live worms and great service! I ordered a batch of live composting worms for my new wormery, and they arrived in perfect condition — lively, healthy, and ready to get to work straight away. The packaging was eco-friendly, and the team even included a little guide on how to settle them in. My kitchen scraps are disappearing fast, and I’ve already started harvesting my first bit of worm compost. Couldn’t be happier!

Fantastic bokashi composting advice As a complete beginner to bokashi composting, I really appreciated how helpful the team were. They answered all my questions quickly and gave me simple, clear instructions to get started. The bokashi bran is top quality and smells fresh and pleasant. After just a few weeks, I’ve turned my kitchen waste into brilliant compost-ready material with no odour or mess. Highly recommended!

Top-notch British birdseed mix The British birdseed from Wigglys is superb. It attracts a lovely variety of garden birds — robins, finches, and even a pair of goldfinches have started visiting regularly. You can tell it’s a quality mix with no fillers or dust. Delivery was quick, and everything was packaged sustainably. It’s become my go-to source for bird feed!
