Supporting Our Farm and Wildlife
At Wiggly Wigglers, we are proud to be based on a Duchy Farm in Herefordshire and to be one of the six focus farms selected by the Duchy estate. Our farm is dedicated to advancing natural resources and carbon management, with a strong commitment to sustainability. Over the last 18 months, we have enhanced local wildlife habitats by planting a complete wildflower meadow and creating a new pond. Here’s how our practices in growing, mixing, and bagging birdseed support our farm, wildlife, and the community:
- Cultivating Native Plants: By growing a variety of native plants and hedging, we enhance biodiversity and provide a rich habitat for local wildlife. This practice supports ecosystem stability and resilience.
- Making Compost: We enrich our soil with our own natural compost, which boosts fertility and promotes healthy plant growth, essential for producing high-quality birdseed.
-
Brewing Compost Teas: Our nutrient-rich compost teas naturally feed crops and improve soil health by enhancing microbial activity and nutrient availability.
Implementing Mob Grazing: Using mob grazing techniques with our cattle mimics natural grazing patterns, improving soil structure, increasing organic matter, and enhancing plant diversity. - Planting Cover Crops: Cover crops protect and nourish the soil, prevent erosion, and enhance soil biodiversity by adding organic matter and improving soil structure.
- Reducing Soil Disturbance: By minimizing ploughing, we maintain soil integrity, which supports a thriving ecosystem by preserving soil microbial communities and reducing erosion.
By growing and processing our birdseed on-site, we reduce our carbon footprint and ensure the highest quality product. This process not only supports local wildlife but also provides employment and sustains our farming community. Thanks to these efforts, a BTO survey identified 49 species of birds on our farm—an impressive result demonstrating the positive impact of our practices.
YOUR Support: Additionally, our customers have contributed to our success through our Piggy Bank at Wiggly Wigglers. This support enables us to continue our wildlife-friendly practices and further enhance our farm’s ecosystem. Read more here: https://www.wigglywigglers.co.uk/pages/the-wiggly-piggy-bank
By choosing our birdseed, you’re directly supporting our farm and its wildlife-friendly practices, promoting a healthier environment for both birds and people.

Q: What birds can I attract with sunflower hearts?
A: Sunflower hearts are loved by a variety of garden birds, including finches, sparrows, tits, and goldfinches.
Q: Are sunflower hearts better than whole sunflower seeds?
A: Sunflower hearts are a convenient option as they are already shelled, making them easier for birds to eat. They eliminate the mess of husks and are suitable for birds with smaller beaks.
Q: Do I need a special feeder for sunflower hearts?
A: You can use a standard seed feeder for sunflower hearts. However, consider using feeders with smaller ports to attract smaller birds and reduce waste.
Q: Can I mix sunflower hearts with other bird foods?
A: Yes, sunflower hearts can be mixed with other bird seeds to create a varied and nutritious blend. This can attract different bird species to your garden.
Q: How often should I refill the sunflower heart feeder?
A: Check the feeder regularly and refill it when it's empty to ensure a continuous supply of food, especially during colder months when birds need extra energy.
Q: Can I feed sunflower hearts year-round?
A: Yes, sunflower hearts can be offered throughout the year as a staple in a bird's diet. They provide essential nutrients and energy.
Q: Do sunflower hearts go bad?
A: Store sunflower hearts in a cool, dry place to prevent them from becoming rancid. Check for any signs of spoilage before offering them to birds and replace any stale or mouldy seeds.
Q: Can I offer sunflower hearts to ground-feeding birds?
A: Yes, sunflower hearts can be scattered on the ground or offered in ground feeders to attract ground-feeding birds like sparrows and doves.
Q: Are there any birds I should be cautious about attracting with sunflower hearts?
A: Sunflower hearts generally attract smaller garden birds. However, larger birds like pigeons may also be interested. Consider using feeders designed to deter larger species if necessary.
Q: Should I provide water alongside sunflower hearts?
A: Yes, always have a fresh water source nearby. Birds need water for drinking and bathing, especially when consuming dry foods like sunflower hearts.
