How Nina Transformed Her Food Waste with DIY Bokashi Composting

We love hearing how our customers are using Bokashi composting to reduce food waste and improve their gardens. A huge thank you to Nina for sharing her experience with our DIY Bokashi Composting Kit—a simple and affordable way to turn kitchen scraps into nutrient-rich compost.

Nina’s Bokashi Journey

Nina first discovered Bokashi bran at a local community garden plant sale in May last year. Keen to reduce her food waste, she decided to set up her own homemade Bokashi system using cheap containers from eBay. At first, she started with just one bin but soon added another to keep up with the process.

Despite using a basic DIY setup, Nina found that Bokashi composting worked brilliantly for her needs. Now, she hardly ever puts food waste out for collection! Instead, she adds it to her compost to improve her clay-heavy Whitstable soil, hoping for a fantastic vegetable harvest this year. In the meantime, she’s using the Bokashi tea as a natural drain cleaner and a fertiliser for her beloved houseplants.

Why Try Bokashi Composting?

If you’re new to Bokashi, it’s an easy and efficient way to compost almost all food waste, including cooked food, dairy, and even small amounts of meat—things that traditional composting struggles with. Here are just a few of its benefits:

Fast Composting: Unlike traditional composting, which can take months, Bokashi fermentation breaks food waste down in just two weeks before it’s ready to be added to soil or compost bins.

No Smells or Pests: The airtight Bokashi process prevents bad odours and deters rodents and flies, making it perfect for indoor or small-space composting.

Improves Soil Health: Bokashi composting enriches your soil with beneficial microbes, making it more fertile and helping plants grow stronger.

Bokashi Tea for Extra Uses: The liquid produced (Bokashi tea) can be used to feed plants, enrich soil, or even keep drains clean!

How to Start Bokashi Composting with Any Bucket

Getting started with Bokashi is incredibly simple, and you don’t need an expensive bin to begin. Here’s how you can make your own system just like Nina did:

1️⃣ Choose Your Containers: Any sturdy, airtight bucket with a lid will work. Many people use two stacking buckets—one with small drainage holes inside another to collect Bokashi tea.

2️⃣ Add Food Waste & Bokashi Bran: Start by placing a layer of Bokashi bran at the bottom. Then, add your food waste in layers, sprinkling more bran on top each time. Press it down to remove air pockets.

3️⃣ Keep It Airtight: Close the lid tightly to allow the fermentation process to work. Drain any liquid every few days and use it to fertilise plants or clean drains.

4️⃣ Bury or Compost After 2 Weeks: Once full, let your bin sit for two weeks before burying the waste in your garden soil or adding it to your compost bin. It will break down quickly, enriching the soil with nutrients.
