At Lower Blakemere Farm, we’re always striving to make farming more sustainable by closing the loop and improving practices for a better future. From innovative bedding solutions for our cattle to clever crop rotations and a little help from some hardworking pigs, here’s what’s happening on the farm this year.
Healthier Herds with Bokashi
Our 65 cows are benefiting greatly from a new addition to the cattle sheds—Bokashi. This fermented organic material improves bedding conditions, reduces harmful bacteria, and boosts the health of the herd. It also acts as a pre-compost, enriching the manure we collect and speeding up its composting process when we return it to the fields. It’s a win-win for the cows and the soil!
Growing Healthier Soils
We’re committed to cultivating healthier soils, which is why our crop rotation includes wheat, peas, barley, and grass. By incorporating cover crops into the mix, we’re working to enhance soil structure, fertility, and biodiversity. These sustainable practices are paving the way for a more resilient farming system.
The Work of Our Pigs
No update from the farm would be complete without a mention of our four Oxford Sandy and Black pigs. They’ve been busy clearing the bank and preparing the land for its next transformation. Soon, these industrious pigs will head to the butcher, making way for a new group of pigs to carry on their work. Their efforts mean we’ll soon have delicious sausages and joints available for sale—stay tuned!
