This visit underscored the farm’s commitment to changing to more regenerative practises and innovative composting techniques, particularly the use of bokashi and worm composting.
During his tour, Prince William immersed himself in the farm’s sustainable practices. He was introduced to bokashi composting—a Japanese method that ferments organic waste using bran and molasses. Upon handling the fermented material, the Prince remarked on its sweet, cidery aroma and noted, “Sounds like sushi.” He was keen to understand how we produce Bokashi Bran on the farm and saw the bags fermenting, learning how the process harnesses beneficial microbes to pre-treat organic waste and enhance soil health.
The Prince also investigated the Wiggly Wigglers domestic Bokashi Kit and Worm Composting Kit , expressing fascination with the transformation of household waste into nutrient-rich compost. He inquired about scaling this process for larger applications and wanted to know which countries were leading the way. Heather Gorringe, co-founder of Wiggly Wigglers, observed, “He got right in there... And he loved the worms, so that was really great.”

At Lower Blakemere Farm, bokashi composting is integrated into daily operations. In the cow sheds, bokashi is used to pre-compost farmyard manure, enhancing nutrient content and reducing odours to enrich soil health and minimise inputs of fertilier and chemical.
Prince William’s visit garnered significant media attention, with features in prominent outlets such as The Telegraph, BBC Hereford & Worcester, and Yahoo News. These publications highlighted the farm’s innovative practices and the Prince’s engagement with sustainable agriculture.
