If you have a wormery, you probably already know how to protect it from the winter chill, but what about the summer heat? Your worms need just as much TLC during the summer months! The British summer can be unpredictable, with scorching temperatures and bright sunshine one minute, and heavy rain or thunderstorms the next. These conditions can make life tough for your worms, leading to potential overheating or flooding.
High temperatures can cause the waste in your bin to rot faster, increase acidity, and generally make the environment uncomfortable for your worms. In extreme cases, it can even lead to the unfortunate demise of your wriggly friends.
So, how can you keep your wormery in tip-top shape during summer?
- Rain Cap: Invest in a rain cap for your wormery. It allows airflow while keeping most of the rain out, preventing the sump from filling up and reducing the risk of your worms drowning.
- Shredded Paper: Use plenty of shredded paper and monitor how fast your worms are eating. Avoid overfeeding to keep things clean and odour-free.
- Anti-Acid Lime Mix: Add a handful of anti-acid lime mix to control the pH and keep your worms in peak condition.
- Empty the Sump: Empty the sump daily and use the nutritious ‘worm tea’ in a 10:1 ratio with water to organically feed your vegetables and flowers. You’ll be amazed at how well your plants will thrive with this natural fertiliser!
With a bit of care and attention, your wormery can flourish all summer long, providing you with rich compost and happy, healthy worms!
