Why Choose Wiggly Wigglers' Bokashi Active Bran?

Our Bokashi Active Bran is made right here on our family farm in Herefordshire, using EM1 – the original Effective Microorganisms formula developed by Dr Teruo Higa in the 1980s. This pioneering technology combines lactic acid bacteria, yeasts, and photosynthetic microbes to ferment food waste efficiently while retaining all the good stuff for your soil.

This bran is dried for stability, which means it keeps its microbial power intact until you’re ready to use it – no risk of losing its potency. And it’s perfect for any Bokashi composting system, whether it’s one of ours, one you’ve bought elsewhere, or even a DIY setup you’ve cobbled together yourself. (Yes, you can make your own Bokashi System – it’s easier than you think!)

What Makes Bokashi Composting Special?

Bokashi composting is anaerobic, which means it uses microorganisms to ferment waste rather than decomposing it the traditional way. This preserves more nutrients, radically reduces carbon loss, and prevents the production of methane – a potent greenhouse gas often emitted by rotting waste in landfills.

  • Fermentation Powerhouse: The EM1 microbes break down food scraps while enriching them with vitamins, enzymes, and amino acids.

  • Nutrient Retention: Unlike traditional composting, Bokashi keeps essential nutrients like nitrogen locked into the compost.

  • Soil Microbiome Booster: When buried in the soil, fermented Bokashi waste acts like a microbial super soil food, encouraging beneficial soil life and improving plant health.

Used Worldwide, Loved Locally

From smallholdings in the UK to massive agricultural operations in Japan, Bokashi composting is used worldwide to manage waste sustainably. In urban environments, it’s an excellent solution for compact spaces where traditional composting isn’t practical. Farmers in Asia often rely on Bokashi methods to rejuvenate overworked soils, and in Hawaii, it’s commonly used for waste management and soil restoration.

How to Use Bokashi Active Bran:

  1. Start Layering: Add food scraps to your Bokashi bin in manageable layers.

  2. Sprinkle Generously: Add a handful of Bokashi Active Bran after each layer – about 2–3 tablespoons per 2 inches of waste.

  3. Press Down: Compact the waste to remove air and maintain the anaerobic conditions Bokashi microbes need.

  4. Seal the Deal: Keep the bin airtight to let the microbes get to work fermenting your waste.

  5. Harvest the Bokashi Tea: Drain off the liquid every few days; dilute it and use it as a powerful natural fertiliser for plants or even to keep your drains smelling fresh.

  6. Bury the Gold: Once your bin is full and has fermented for 10–14 days, bury the waste in your garden soil. In just a few weeks, it will break down completely, improving the soil's texture, microbial life, and nutrient levels.

The Science Bit – What’s Going On Inside?

When you add Bokashi Active Bran to your kitchen scraps, the EM1 microbes kick-start an anaerobic fermentation process. Here’s why that’s amazing:

  • Lactic Acid Bacteria: These microbes produce organic acids that preserve the waste while enhancing the soil’s acidity when buried – perfect for plants that love acidic conditions like blueberries.

  • Yeasts: These fungi break down carbohydrates into simpler compounds, improving nutrient availability for plants.

  • Photosynthetic Bacteria: These superstars help synthesise essential nutrients like amino acids and sugars, promoting healthier, faster plant growth.

Dr Higa’s revolutionary research showed that these microbes work in synergy to suppress harmful bacteria, prevent putrefaction, and enrich waste with compounds that regenerate soil health. It’s no wonder Bokashi systems are trusted by gardeners, farmers, and eco-enthusiasts worldwide.

Q: What sort of compost do I get out of my Bokashi Kit?

A; Bokashi is more about "pickling" your waste than actually composting it. The Effective Micro-organisms in the bran activate as it gets damp and this ferments your waste. This means the end result once you have filled the bin and waited for about 2 weeks looks pretty much the same as when you put it in... However this fermented waste is very different to your original waste and will smell "pickly" and the key thing is once you put it into a trench in your garden or compost heap it it will be exposed to the air and will break down very very quickly. At the same time this material is not attractive to vermin.

Q; What sort of waste can be used in the Bokashi Kit?

I understand majority of it is kitchen waste (meat, fish, fruit, vegetables), can paper be used such as junk post mail, magazines and so forth?

A: You can ferment all kitchen waste but it would be pointless to add paper as the Bokashi doesn't compost the waste it ferments it pickles it. Paper does not smell and so you would add this to a conventional composter without a problem. In our office we use a Bokashi Bucket for all our lunch scraps, fruit peelings etc and then we shred all our paper waste for packaging.

Q: How do you know if the waste is broken down by the microbes from the bran?

A: The waste is not broken down, its fermented and you can tell very easily as the whole thing has a sweet pickly smell to it. The process is all very easy. As you fill the bucket you add a sprinkling of Bokashi. Once its full you start on another bucket leaving the original to ferment over the time it takes you to fill the next. In most people's experience that takes about two weeks.
